Lithium and alkaline AA and AAA batteries are the same size and both 1.5 V, so either one fits by size. Where a device’s manual names one type, fit that type.

The AAA pair, Energizer’s L92 and E92, keep the same 25-year and 10-year shelf lives on their sheets.
Energizer’s lithium handbook rates lithium’s leakage resistance “Superior” and alkaline’s “Good”, and its product page calls Ultimate Lithium “100% leak proof”, qualified as “based on standard use”.

Kidde COB and COP CO alarms (AA models)
Alkaline AA: Energizer E91, Gold Peak 15A or Golden Power GLR6A; no lithium
Google Nest Thermostat
1.5 V AAA alkaline

From each maker’s own pages. Another device’s manual is the one to follow.
August says that with lithium or rechargeable batteries, its smart locks other than the Wi-Fi Smart Lock may not give reliable low battery alerts.
Don’t mix them in one device
Energizer’s lithium handbook says not to mix its lithium AA with used batteries or other battery types, and Duracell says mixing types in one device may cause the batteries to leak. Change the whole set at once.
Common questions
Is a lithium AA battery rechargeable?
No. Energizer's lithium handbook says its lithium iron disulfide AA and AAA cells are not designed to be recharged.
Can a lithium AA damage a device made for alkaline?
Not usually, by Energizer's lithium handbook: a fresh lithium AA reads up to 1.83 V before it's under load, and the handbook says this will typically not damage electronic components. Follow the manual where it rules lithium out: Kidde's CO alarm guides say not to use lithium.
Why does my battery tester say a lithium AA is fine when the device says it's flat?
Energizer's lithium handbook says a lithium AA reading 1.6 V is already discharged, though an alkaline at 1.6 V may read good. It counts a lithium AA under 1.70 V as completely discharged.
Volts, weights, shelf life and temperatures come from Energizer’s datasheets and handbooks; which type each device takes from its maker’s own manual or help pages, read on October 25, 2026. Checked against published data from Energizer, Blink, Google, Kidde and Schlage (plus 2 more).
