What battery does my thermostat take?

In the models here, a battery thermostat takes 2 AAA, 2 AA or 3 AA batteries, and some take none because they run on the house wiring or a built-in battery. Room sensors use a CR2, a CR2477 coin cell or AAA batteries.

Changing the Nest Thermostat’s batteries

  1. Pull the thermostat display off the base.
  2. Take the old batteries out of the back of the display.
  3. Put in 2 new AAA alkaline batteries.
  4. Push the display back onto the base until it clicks into place.

Why a Nest Thermostat has batteries at all

Google says the Nest Thermostat gets its power from the heating and cooling system. Its AAA batteries are a backup, and they top up the power when the system can’t deliver enough.
