How to change the battery

  1. Press down on the polished stainless steel battery cover and turn it counterclockwise until it stops.
  2. Lift off the cover and take out the old battery.
  3. Put in a new CR2032 with the positive side facing up. You’ll hear a sound when it connects.
  4. Line up the three tabs on the cover with the three slots on the AirTag, then turn the cover clockwise until it stops.

Bitter-coated batteries

To discourage swallowing, Apple suggests a CR2032 with a bitterant coating, such as the Duracell 2032 with Bitter Coating. Apple also warns that some coated batteries might not work with AirTag or other battery-powered products.

Checking the battery level

Your iPhone shows a notification when the AirTag battery is low. To check it any time, open the Find My app, tap the Items tab and tap the AirTag. Low Battery appears under its name when the charge is low.

Keep coin batteries away from children

Apple warns that an AirTag, its battery cover and the battery might be a choking hazard to small children. It adds that a swallowed coin battery can cause internal chemical burns in as little as 2 hours.

The National Capital Poison Center says that if anyone swallows a battery, immediately call the 24-hour National Battery Ingestion Hotline at 1-800-498-8666 or your poison center at 1-800-222-1222. Don’t delay. Immediate treatment decreases severity.
