The OneTouch, Accu-Chek and Contour meters here run on one or two CR2032 coin cells, except the Accu-Chek Compact Plus, which takes 2 AAA. FreeStyle Libre 2 readers and Dexcom G7 receivers are rechargeable.

Changing a meter’s batteries
OneTouch says to start with the meter turned off, and never to change a battery while the meter is connected to a computer.
Your stored results stay in the meter when the batteries come out, OneTouch and Accu-Chek say, but the date and time may need setting again. Ascensia says the Contour Next One keeps everything if the new batteries go in within 5 minutes.
Accu-Chek’s Guide and Guide Me have a child-resistant battery door: push a narrow object such as a pen into its slot. Check your meter’s manual for the battery and the steps for your model.
Rechargeable readers
Abbott says to contact its Customer Service about replacing a FreeStyle Libre 2 reader that won’t turn on after charging, or whose battery life drops a lot. It also says to charge the reader fully before storing it for more than 3 months.
Keep coin batteries away from children
OneTouch’s battery pages warn of a chemical burn hazard: a swallowed coin battery can quickly cause severe internal burns.
The National Capital Poison Center says that if anyone swallows a battery, immediately call the 24-hour National Battery Ingestion Hotline at 1-800-498-8666 or your poison center at 1-800-222-1222. Don’t delay. Immediate treatment decreases severity.
