What Battery For

Battery size chart

AA, AAA, C and D alkaline cells are all 1.5 V; they differ in size and how much they hold. A 9V is 9 V, and the A23 and A27 are 12 V.

Energizer’s 9V sheet gives both 6LF22 and 6LR61. Its AAAA sheet gives LR8D425 and LR61. The A23 sheet gives no IEC code, and the A27 sheet neither an IEC nor an ANSI code. The A544 is four LR44 cells in one 6 V battery (IEC 4LR44).

How to read it

Ten batteries standing side by side, to scale: AAAA, AAA, AA, C and D cells, then the smaller N, A23, CR123A and CR2 cells and a rectangular 9V battery.
Drawn to scale. An A23 is a little over half an AA’s length and slimmer; the CR123A and CR2 are short and wide for their length.

An AAAA is 8.3 mm across, smaller than an AAA. The CR123A and CR2 are 3 V lithium cells, twice the voltage of an AA. Coin and button cells are on the coin and button charts, and what each battery reads full and empty on the battery voltage chart.

Common questions

Are AA and AAA batteries the same voltage?

Yes, both are 1.5 V on Energizer's E91 (AA) and E92 (AAA) sheets. The AA is bigger: 14.5 x 50.5 mm against 10.5 x 44.5 mm.

Is a CR123A the same as a 123?

Yes, by Energizer: its 123 page lists CR123A and CR123 among the codes the 123 replaces, and the 123 sheet gives IEC CR17345, 3 V.

What's the difference between an A23 and an A27?

Both are 12 V on Energizer's sheets, but the A27 is smaller: 8 x 28.2 mm against the A23's 10.3 x 28.5 mm. Energizer rates the A23 at 55 mAh and the A27 at 22 mAh.

Where we get our information from

Sizes, volts and codes come from Energizer’s datasheets and its product pages, with Duracell’s MN21 sheet and GP’s 23AE page for the A23’s other codes and uses. Checked against published data from Energizer, Duracell and GP Batteries.
