The Jeep, Ram, Dodge and Chrysler manuals listed here each name one CR2032 for the key fob, except the 2021 Jeep Wrangler’s, which recommends a CR2450.

Each of these manuals recommends a battery from Mopar, as aftermarket coin cells may not match the original’s dimensions.
How to change it, in the Cherokee’s steps
- Slide the latch on the back of the fob sideways with your thumb and pull out the emergency key.
- Take out the screw if there is one, then gently pry the two halves apart without damaging the seal. The 2026 Compass manual uses a #2 flat-blade screwdriver or a coin.
- Turn the back cover over, battery facing down, and tap it lightly on a table so the old battery drops out.
- Fit the new one with its + sign matching the + sign inside the battery clip on the back cover, then snap the halves together.
Don’t touch the battery terminals on the back housing or the printed circuit board. Avoid touching the new battery with your fingers too: skin oils can make it deteriorate, so clean it with rubbing alcohol if you do.
The 2021 Wrangler’s fob is different. Slide the old battery forward and up with a small flat-blade screwdriver in the removal slot, taking care not to damage the board underneath, then slide the new one in, positive side up, until it sits under the tabs. Press its mechanical key release button only with the fob pointing away from your body and eyes.
Starting with a low fob battery
If the ignition doesn’t change when you press the button, or the 2025 Durango’s display says Key Fob Not Detected, the fob’s battery may be low. Put the nose of the fob against the START/STOP button and push it to work the ignition.
The Cherokee and Durango manuals call the end opposite the emergency key the nose. The 2021 Wrangler manual calls the end with the mechanical flip key the nose.
Keep coin batteries away from children
Jeep’s 2021 Wrangler manual warns that a swallowed coin cell can cause severe internal burns in just two hours and can lead to death.
The National Capital Poison Center says that if anyone swallows a battery, immediately call the 24-hour National Battery Ingestion Hotline at 1-800-498-8666 or your poison center at 1-800-222-1222. Don’t delay. Immediate treatment decreases severity.
