How to change it, in Nissan’s steps
- Take the mechanical key out of the Intelligent Key.
- Put a small screwdriver into the slit at the corner and twist it to separate the upper part from the lower part, with a cloth over it to protect the casing. The 2023 Kicks manual adds not to press the screwdriver in too hard.
- Hold the new battery by its edges and fit it with the + side facing the bottom of the lower part.
- Close the lid securely, then press the buttons to check it works.

Nissan says not to touch the internal circuit and electric terminals, which could cause a malfunction. Holding the battery across its contact points seriously depletes it.
How long it lasts
Nissan’s 2023 Altima and 2024 Sentra manuals put the battery’s life at about two years, depending on how it’s used.
Nissan’s parts site says a CR2032 is right for most models, and to check your owner’s manual for yours.
Starting with a dead Intelligent Key
With a discharged key, the 2023 Altima manual says to put the shift lever in P, press the brake firmly and touch the ignition switch with the Intelligent Key. A chime sounds. Within 10 seconds, push the ignition switch with the brake still pressed, and the engine starts.

Keep coin batteries away from children
Nissan says to be careful not to let children swallow the battery or the parts you take off.
The National Capital Poison Center says that if anyone swallows a battery, immediately call the 24-hour National Battery Ingestion Hotline at 1-800-498-8666 or your poison center at 1-800-222-1222. Don’t delay. Immediate treatment decreases severity.
