What Battery For

What size power station for camping?

Add the watt-hours each thing uses in a day, watts times hours, and divide by 0.85. A 12 V fridge running all day, a Starlink Mini for 6 hours and a CPAP with its humidifier for a night come to about 1,286 Wh.

A worked day

One day’s watt-hours for a fridge, a Starlink Mini and a CPAP
GearPower × hoursWh
Engel MT45 fridge, at its top draw28.2 W × 24 h676.8
Starlink Mini, at its top average40 W × 6 h240
ResMed AirSense 10 CPAP with its humidifier22 Wh an hour × 8 h176
Total, then ÷ 0.851,092.8 Wh ÷ 0.851,286

The fridge line takes Engel’s top draw for all 24 hours. Engel gives a range, from 6.5 to 28.2 W, so the real day may use less. For gear that runs the same hours, type the watts as a sum, such as 28.2 + 40, in the power station size calculator.

DC outlets

Engel’s MT45 runs on 12 or 24 V DC as well as 110 or 120 V AC, and Starlink rates the Mini’s input at 12 to 48 V. Bluetti says a DC-to-DC kit on a station’s 12 V or 48 V port skips the inverter, which can bring efficiency to 90% or higher.

Cold and heat

Jackery gives the Explorer 300’s working range as -10 to 40 °C (14 to 104 °F). Look up the range for your own station in its manual.

Common questions

Is a 500 Wh power station enough for a 12 V fridge?

Not for an Engel MT45 at its top draw for a whole day, which needs 797 Wh: 28.2 W × 24 h ÷ 0.85. Engel's lower draw of 6.5 W would need 184 Wh.
