How to change it, in Toyota’s steps

Two car keys: on the left a smart key, a rounded remote with three buttons and no blade; on the right a key with three buttons on its head and a metal blade.
A smart key has no blade showing: its mechanical key slides out. A key without the smart key system has its blade and buttons in one.
  1. Smart key only: slide the release and take out the mechanical key.
  2. Pry off the key cover with a flathead screwdriver. Cover its tip with a rag (the 2024 Tundra manual says tape) so it doesn’t damage the key. On a key without the smart key system, then remove the battery cover.
  3. If the electronic key module sticks to the cover and hides the battery, lift the module out to reach it.
  4. Take the old battery out with a small flathead screwdriver and put the new one in with the + terminal facing up.
  5. Refit the cover. On a key without the smart key system, the battery cover goes back with its tab facing up.
  6. Press lock or unlock and check that the doors respond.
A smart key with its small mechanical key slid out beside it, and a flat screwdriver with its tip wrapped in tape set into the slot at the end of the case.
Slide out the mechanical key, then pry at the slot it leaves, with the screwdriver’s tip covered.

Toyota’s notices say to work with dry hands, as moisture may rust the battery, and not to touch or move any other part inside or bend the battery terminals.

If the key battery dies

A depleted battery stops the smart key system and wireless remote working properly, or shortens their range, Toyota says. Carry the mechanical key with the electronic key: it opens the driver’s door.

To start the engine, put the shift lever in P, press the brake firmly and touch the Toyota emblem side of the electronic key to the engine switch. When a buzzer sounds and the switch turns to IGNITION ON, press it shortly and firmly. Toyota calls this a temporary measure and recommends replacing the battery right away.

In the 2023 Prius, touch the area behind the buttons on the electronic key to the power switch. It turns to ON.

Keep coin batteries away from children

Toyota warns that a swallowed battery may cause severe chemical burns in as little as 2 hours, and death or serious injury. If the key’s cover won’t close firmly, stop using the key, store it where children can’t reach it and contact a Toyota dealer.

The National Capital Poison Center says that if anyone swallows a battery, immediately call the 24-hour National Battery Ingestion Hotline at 1-800-498-8666 or your poison center at 1-800-222-1222. Don’t delay. Immediate treatment decreases severity.

Where can I get a battery for a Toyota key?

Toyota's manuals say batteries can be bought at a Toyota dealer, local electrical appliance shops or camera stores.
